Rising Damp - Is it real?

Unfortunately nowadays there are so many rumours in working industries. In the surveying/chemical industry, Rising Damp is a huge rumour thats spread so far people are now making money off of it!

Rising Damp was thought of and invented by the chemical industry as an easy way to bring money in, and unfortunately they done a good job of spreading the word. Damp Proof and Surveying companies bring in huge amounts of money from selling things off the back of Rising Damp. 

The whole Rising Damp campaign came to prominence in the early 1960's, when companies began to push their damp proof courses and products through marketing. All of their products have to actually do something in order to gain sales, and slapping a sticker on the front stating it 'fixes' Rising Damp was a sure way of fooling people.

So what actually is 'Rising damp'? It's the name given to dampness taking a seat on the lower parts of, generally, external walls. Tide marks may be present internally and sometimes a salt like effect will be on the plaster. 

Think of it this way... if there are wooden bridges that have been standing for years upon years, why hasn't 'Rising Damp' made its way up them? 

Rising Damp is a very controvertial topic, and many damp surveyors/companies have an opinion on it, but hopefully with people like Alpine Surveys battling through the rumours, we can help others become aware of the expensive cons about!
