Water Ingress- What is it?

Water ingress is a term used for when water has made its way into a building and has caused damp. 

There are numerous signs that could indicate whether you have water ingress in your property. A few signs are as followed:

Leaks

If you have a leak on one of your pipes, or have damaged plumbing, the constant water escaping will eventually start to create damp in the structure/walls of the property.

Peeling wallpaper/paint

If your wallpaper or paint is starting to chip or peel off in areas where it shouldn’t be- this could be a sign of water ingress.

 

There are several factors that can cause water ingress in a property, it’s a good idea to have a good understanding of the inside and outside condition of your property, so that if anything does change, it will be quickly noticed. 

Damaged roofs can play a part in water ingress. Broken tiles or faulty chimney flashings can let water through. For example, if a nail is inserted into the wrong part of the roof structure, you will have a nail protruding into the loft space and will easily allow water to make it’s way through the hole.

If you have cracks on the exterior wall of your property, this is a sure way of water ingress.

Cracks in mortar or render on a property is not only a potential danger to the structure of the property but as rainwater runs down the building, once it reaches the crack, it will go in to the fracture, not over it.

Water ingress can often be prevented, typically by, as mentioned before, checking your property.
